Edukans International Uganda is hiring a Communications Assistant to support the planning, coordination, and execution of the LIT Program’s communication strategy, with the primary objective of enhancing the visibility and understanding of LIT among stakeholders and the broader audience. The Communications Assistant will develop communications strategies for Edukans LIT program and promote a positive public image of Edukans International Uganda through media relations, advocacy and dissemination of information. Specifically, the Communications Assistant will work closely with the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer to document and publicize best practices and lessons learnt, and coordinate closely with advocacy related activities and strategies. This role is crucial for ensuring all communication aligns with the program’s goal to support and strengthen its impact in Uganda. The work must align with the communications and advocacy efforts of the Mastercard Foundation, LGF and Edukans International and partner organizations regarding education in Uganda.

Edukans International Uganda will be implementing the Leaders in Teaching program supported by Mastercard Foundation in a consortium led by Luigi Giussani Foundation (LGF). Leaders in Teaching (LIT) initiative aims to transform secondary education across Africa by strengthening the capacity of teachers and school leaders to enable young people to acquire skills, knowledge, and competencies necessary to gain dignified and fulfilling employment. Working through a multi-partner ( incl. British Council, STIR Uganda, VVOB, PEAS, FENU, alongside Teach For Uganda (TU) and Brain Wave) implementation model, LIT is a holistic approach aimed at improving the quality of teaching and learning by addressing critical challenges across the teacher lifecycle, focusing on four key programmatic pillars: (1) Teacher Recruitment, (2) Teacher Training, (3) Education Leadership and Management, and (4) Teacher Motivation.

TEAM/PROGRAMME: LIT Programme COMMUNICATIONS ASSISTANT (01)

LOCATION: Kampala with frequent field travels

SCOPE OF ROLE: Reports to the MEL Officer – LIT

Supervises: None

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

1. Implementation of the LIT Comprehensive Communications Strategy

• Collaborate with the TRAIN and other pillars consortium lead communications focal person(s) and other stakeholders to co-create/develop a detailed, integrated communications strategy.

This strategy will guide internal and external communication activities, ensuring they align with the program’s objectives

Directly contribute to the creation of high-quality content, including Project reports, Presentations, Into graphics, briefers, blog posts, social media updates, press releases, newsletters, and video content that highlights innovative teaching practices, CPD opportunities, and success stories from participating partners.

Maintain Edukans International Uganda’s LIT program updates in the official website and other communications channels, including social media in co-operation with the Country Directors Office.

Active engagement during training includes workshops on effective storytelling, social media management, and digital content creation.

2. Stakeholder Mapping and Engagement.

The Communications Assistant will Assist in mapping out key internal and external stakeholders, identifying their communication needs and expectations while developing tailored

communication approaches to foster engagement with government entities, education authorities, schools, and the broader community.

Support the consortium in positioning the LIT program as a credible voice in education reform and teacher development. This includes identifying policy touchpoints, producing content that contributes to education policy discourse, and supporting the creation of opinion pieces, briefs, convenings, and other knowledge-based outputs that highlight innovations, results, and learnings from the program.

3. Events and key Campaigns

• Lead the design and execution of joint communication campaigns that promote continuous professional development (CPD), gender-responsive teaching practices, and girls’ participation in STEM fields. These campaigns can include social media campaigns, teacher recognition events, and school-level engagement.

4. Branding and Visibility, Media Engagement and Buy-in

Identify key media outlets and influencers who can help amplify the program’s messages. Build relationships with journalists and media platforms to gain coverage of the program’s achievements, campaigns, and events.

Ensure consistent application of Mastercard Foundation branding guidelines across all communications materials, while aligning with the branding requirements of consortium partners while working with the communications consultant.

5. Monitoring and Evaluation of Communication Activities

Develop tools and mechanisms for tracking the effectiveness of communication efforts (e.g., social media analytics, audience feedback surveys, media coverage reports).

Regularly evaluate the communications strategy and adjust based on performance data.

Knowledge Mobilization and Learning Dissemination:

Collaborate with the consortium’s learning and research leads to incorporate insights, data, and emerging practices into accessible communications outputs. These may include briefs, learning snapshots, infographics, explainer animations, and other formats that promote cross-partner learning and inform education stakeholders.

Key Audience

Project beneficiaries, targeted districts, humanitarian and development assistance partners, the Government of Uganda/OPM, UN agencies such as UNHCR and UNICEF and donor-Mastercard Foundation.

Academic Background, Experience and Person Specifications:

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in any Communications, Journalism, or public relations field from a recognised institution. Further experience in education programme implementation is an added advantage.

At least 5 years progressive experience in humanitarian and development and 2 of those years in a Communications role in an international development or humanitarian organization.

Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including influencing, and negotiation

Demonstrated ability to manage relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, including government bodies, NGOs, schools, and international donors.

Demonstrable ability to produce and publish multimedia content (videos, social media campaigns, webinars).

Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.

Computer literacy and excellent documentation skills are a must.
