Job Title: Project Coordinator (2 Positions)


Location: Nairobi & Kisumu County, Kenya
Reports To: Principal Investigator
Position Type: Full-Time, Contract


Project Overview


The AMANI Study (Accelerating Maternal and Newborn Survival) is a collaborative research and implementation initiative aimed at strengthening Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) systems across selected counties in Kenya. The study seeks to enhance the quality, consistency, and utilization of maternal and perinatal death audit data to foster evidence-based decision-making and accelerate reductions in preventable maternal and neonatal deaths.


This project will work closely with the Kenya Ministry of Health (MoH), County Health Management Teams (CHMTs), and implementing partners to operationalize an enhanced practice facilitation package, including audit and feedback mechanisms, mentorship, and data-driven performance improvement.


Position Summary


The Project Coordinator will provide day-to-day oversight, coordination, and technical support for the implementation of the AMANI Study intervention package within assigned counties. The incumbent will ensure the effective rollout of MPDSR-related activities, promote high-quality data management (particularly through DHIS2), and strengthen stakeholder engagement at facility, county, and national levels.


Two coordinators will be recruited:



  • One based in Nairobi County (urban implementation site)
  • One based in Western Kenya (Kisumu County or surrounding regions)


The ideal candidate is a self-driven public health professional with demonstrated experience in health systems strengthening, and maternal and newborn health interventions in Kenya.


Key Responsibilities



  1. Project Coordination and Implementation



  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee day-to-day project operations in assigned facilities and counties.
  • Develop and manage detailed activity work plans, budgets, and timelines to ensure efficient delivery of project outputs.
  • Coordinate field logistics, stakeholder engagements, and local approvals in alignment with institutional and donor requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to ethical standards, MoH policies, and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) in all project activities.
  • Support the implementation and monitoring of the practice facilitation package (Audit & Feedback and Enhanced Mentorship).



  1. Data Management, Monitoring, and Evaluation (M&E)



  • Work closely with the M&E team to track key performance indicators (KPIs) and ensure accurate, complete, and timely reporting.
  • Facilitate data entry, validation, and analysis of maternal and perinatal death cases within DHIS2 or approved national databases.
  • Conduct data quality assessments (DQAs) and provide structured feedback to health facilities and CHMTs.
  • Generate and interpret DHIS2 dashboards, summary reports, and data visualizations to guide performance improvement.
  • Maintain strict data confidentiality and security, in compliance with institutional and national data protection standards.
  • Support integration of MPDSR data into broader county health information systems.



  1. Capacity Building and Technical Support



  • Coordinate and facilitate training workshops for health facility teams on MPDSR processes, data entry, and DHIS2 utilization.
  • Provide ongoing mentorship to healthcare providers and CHMTs to strengthen skills in conducting and documenting death audits.
  • Identify system or process gaps affecting MPDSR implementation and develop targeted action plans with county stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with national MoH MPDSR focal persons to harmonize practices and promote sustainability.



  1. Stakeholder Engagement and Communication



  • Serve as the primary liaison between the AMANI Study team, CHMTs, implementing partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Organize and document regular coordination meetings, technical working groups, and learning exchanges.
  • Prepare and disseminate high-quality progress reports, success stories, and technical briefs to donors and partners.
  • Represent the project in relevant forums, conferences, or working groups as delegated by the Principal Investigator.



  1. Accountability and Resource Management



  • Ensure prudent use of project funds, materials, and logistics in line with organizational policies and donor guidelines.
  • Supervise and mentor assigned project staff, including data collectors and practice facilitators
  • Maintain accurate records of project assets and activity deliverables.
  • Uphold ethical standards and promote a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.


Qualifications and Experience


Education



  • Diploma/Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Public Health, Epidemiology, Health Information Management, or related field.
  • Master’s degree in Public Health, Project Management, Epidemiology, or related discipline is an added advantage.


Experience



  • Minimum of 3–5 years of progressively responsible experience in project coordination or health systems strengthening in Kenya.
  • Proven experience working with DHIS2 and health data systems for data entry, validation, analysis, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience with MPDSR, maternal and newborn health (MNCH), or surveillance projects.
  • Experience in capacity building, mentorship, and engaging county-level health management teams.
  • Previous experience with donor-funded projects (e.g., NIH, USAID, Gates Foundation, etc.) is desirable.


Skills and Competencies



  • Strong project management, planning, and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent data management, analytical, and visualization skills (DHIS2, Excel, Power BI, or equivalent).
  • Effective report writing, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills with demonstrated diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Sound knowledge of Kenya’s health system, MPDSR guidelines, and Health Sector Strategic Plans.


Working Conditions



  • Full-time position based in Nairobi or Kisumu County with frequent travel to affiliated health facilities (3–4 sites per county).
  • May involve occasional evening work to meet project deadlines or attend coordination meetings.
  • Must uphold the highest standards of confidentiality, data protection, and ethical conduct.
