The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of addiction and recovery processes, excellent communication skills, and a client-centred approach to care. This role is vital in helping individuals reclaim control over their lives through guidance, education, and evidence-based therapeutic practices.

Addiction counsellors play a crucial role in supporting individuals struggling with substance use disorders and other forms of addiction. Addiction is a chronic condition characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli such as drugs, alcohol, gambling, or other behaviours despite adverse consequences. It affects not only the physical and mental health of individuals but also their relationships, employment, and overall quality of life.

Client Assessment and Evaluation

  • Conduct initial assessments to determine the nature and severity of a client’s addiction.
  • Evaluate physical, emotional, and psychological needs.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans based on assessments.

Individual and Group Counselling

  • Provide one-on-one counselling sessions to address addiction issues and underlying causes.
  • Facilitate group therapy sessions to encourage peer support and shared experiences.
  • Use therapeutic techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, etc.

Treatment Planning and Implementation

  • Collaborate with clients to set short- and long-term recovery goals.
  • Monitor client progress and adjust treatment plans as necessary.
  • Coordinate with medical and mental health professionals when needed.

Education and Prevention

  • Educate clients and families about addiction, relapse prevention, and coping strategies.
  • Conduct workshops or seminars on substance abuse prevention and health education.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of counselling sessions and client progress.
  • Prepare reports for legal or healthcare entities if required (e.g., court, insurance).

Crisis Intervention

  • Respond to clients in crisis, including those experiencing withdrawal symptoms, relapse, or suicidal ideation.
  • Provide immediate support and refer to emergency or specialized services when necessary.

 Referral and Advocacy

  • Refer clients to appropriate resources such as detox centres, rehab programs, vocational training, or housing.
  • Advocate for clients’ access to necessary services and support systems.

 Professional Development

  • Stay current with best practices, research, and legal/ethical standards in addiction treatment. And attend trainings, workshops, or obtain certifications as required.
